What is Anime?

Anime is an abbreviation of the word "animation". Outside Japan, the term most popularly refers to animation originating in Japan. To the West, not all animation is considered anime; and anime is considered a subset of animation.

While some anime is hand drawn, computer assisted animation techniques have become quite common in recent years. Like any entertainment medium, the story lines represent most major genres of fiction. Anime is broadcast on television, distributed on media such as DVD and VHS, and included in video games. Additionally, some are produced as full length motion pictures. Anime often draws influence from manga, light novels, and other cultures. Some anime storylines have been adapted into live action films and television series.

2. Naruto

Naruto closely follows the life of a boy who is feared and detested by the villagers of the hidden leaf village of Konoha. The distrust of the boy has little to do with the boy himself, but it's what's inside him that causes anxiety. Long before Naruto came to be, a Kyuubi (demon fox) with great fury and power waged war taking many lives. The battle ensued for a long time until a man known as the Fourth Hokage, Yondaime, the strongest ninja in Konoha, fiercely fought the Kyuubi. The fight was soon won by Yondaime as he sealed the evil demon in a human body. Thus the boy, Naruto, was born. As Naruto grows he decides to become the strongest ninja in Konoha in an effort to show everyone that he is not as they perceive him to be, but is a human being worthy of love and admiration. But the road to becoming Hokage, the title for the strongest ninja in Konoha, is a long and arduous one. It is a path filled with betrayal, pain, and loss; but with hard work, Naruto may achieve Hokage.

Ichigo unintentionally absorbs all of Rukia's powers instead, allowing him to defeat the hollow with ease.

The next day, Rukia appears in Ichigo's classroom as a transfer student. Much to his surprise, she now appears to be a normal human. She theorizes that it was the unusual strength of Ichigo's spirit that caused him to fully absorb her powers, thus leaving her stranded in the human world. Rukia has transferred herself into a gigai - an artificial human body - while waiting to recover her abilities. In the meantime, Ichigo must take over her job as a shinigami, battling hollows and guiding lost souls to the afterlife.

6. Samurai X

The story of Samurai X really begins in the late 1860s during the last days of the Tokugawa era(see Samurai X-Trust and Betrayal DVDs). Here, the main character of the series, Kenshin Himura, makes his mark. As a fourteen year old with a belief that he could use his sword to protect the peasants and the weak who were suffering during the Tokugawa era and against his master's wishes, Kenshin joins the rebels who seek to overthrow the Tokugawa government. Here, Kenshin becomes an assassin for the rebels. Using his Hiten Mitsurugi Ryuu technique, he ends up killing countless people and as a result, he develops the legendary name "Hitokiri Battousai" or "Battousai: The Slasher". Mysteriously, at the end of the Tokugawa era, Kenshin Himura disappears and begins wondering all over Japan for ten years with the vow in mind never to kill anyone again.

Following his wandering for ten years, Kenshin appears in Tokyo during the Meiji Era(this is where the anime series begins). Here, he meets the other characters of the series Kaoru Kamiya, Yahiko Myoujin, Sanosuke Sagara and Megumi. Together, this group of characters will share many adventures, trials, tribulations and happiness. Whatever happens, they come to form an unbreakable bond which proves their friendship and affection for one another. One more highlight of this entire series is the romantic relationship between Kenshin and Kaoru. At some point, both develop romantic feelings for one another but they have a hard time expressing this feeling. Despite this, it slowly blossoms and the true extent of it is revealed in the DVD movie "Samurai X: Reflections. In the end, Samurai X is not only an anime of sword fighting and martial arts, but it is also a series of emotional conflict, values and most of all intrigue.

7. Digimon

Digital pet called " Digital Monster ," similar in style and concept to the Tamagotchi . It was planned by Wiz and released by Bandai on June 26 , 1997 . The v-pet is similar to its predecessors, with the exceptions of being much hardier and being able to connect to fight other Digimon v-pets. Every owner would start with a Baby Digimon, train it, evolve it, take care of it, and then have battles with other Digimon owners to see who was stronger. The Digimon pet had several evolution capabilities and abilities too, so many owners had many different Digimon. In December, the second generation of Digital Monster was released, followed by a third edition in 1998. Now the new Tamagotchi Digimon is Pendulum that has a total of 9 in the series. 9. Transformers

Four million years ago, on a distant planet called Cybertron, life existed in the form of sentient robots which could think and feel, called Transformers. The race of Transformers was divided into two main clans. Autobots (known as Cybertrons in the Japanese cartoon), led by Optimus Prime, wished for peaceful co-existence between everyone. Decepticons (known as Destrons in the Japanese version), under the command of Megatron, sought conflict and military conquest. Both sides were embroiled in an ages old war for supremacy.

With both sides running low on energy, the Autobots, aboard the Ark, sought out a new source, but the Decepticons, aboard their space-cruiser (later given the name Nemesis in the Beast Wars animated series), ambushed them in hopes of gaining a decisive advantage. The ensuing space battle resulted in both the ships crash landing on a pre-historic Earth, the Ark crashing into the side of a dormant volcano, and the Nemesis crashing in a remote region of South America. (The fate of the Nemesis is subject to retcon. For the full story, see the Nemesis article.)

Four million years passed while the Autobots and Decepticons lay dormant aboard the Ark and the Nemesis. In the Earth year 1984, the volcano housing the Ark erupted, reawakening the ship's computer, Teletraan I, which then modified the Transformers so as to give them alternate modes that could blend in on Earth.
